Ein dunkler Wolkenvorhang bedeckt den Himmel, als die Boeing MD-87 am 8. Oktober 2001 ihren Flug von Mailand nach Kopenhagen aufnehmen will. Die Sichtverhältnisse am Linate-Airport sind beim Start aufgrund des starken Nebels extrem eingeschränkt, so dass sich die Piloten sich praktisch gänzlich auf die Anweisungen aus dem Tower verlassen müssen. Was die Crew nicht weiß: Eine Cessna Citation CJ2 befindet sich ebenfalls auf dem Rollfeld und steuert geradewegs auf die Boeing zu. Gerade als die SAS-Maschine abhebt, kommt es zur Kollision! Sekunden später geht die Cessna in Flammen auf, die vier Insassen verbrennen bei lebendigem Leib. Die MD-87 wiederum stürzt mit voller Wucht in eine Frachthalle und explodiert. On 8 October 2001, Scandinavian Airlines Flight 686, a McDonnell-Douglas MD-87 airliner carrying 110 people bound for Copenhagen, Denmark collided on take-off at Milan's Linate Airport into an Air Evex Cessna Citation CJ2 business jet carrying four people bound for Paris, France. The MD-87 plane suffered major damage and crashed into a hangar shortly afterwards. All 114 people on board the two aircraft were killed, the crash and subsequent fire killed a further more four Italian ground personnel in the hangar, and injured four more.

Letadlo MD-87 utrpělo velké škody a krátce nato narazilo do hangáru. Všech 114 lidí na palubě obou letadel bylo zabito, srážka a následná palba zabila další čtyři italské pozemní zaměstnance v hangáru a zranila další čtyři.
