As the continuation of Zeta Gundam, this series once again follows the story of the Anti Earth Union Group (AEUG) battleship Argama after Zeta's final episode. To fight off the Axis Zeon, now called the Neo Zeon, Captain Bright Noa recruits a group of teenage junk collectors led by the loudmouthed but powerful Newtype Judau Ashta to pilot the Argama's mobile suits. Now sporting a line up of the behemoth MSZ-010 Double Zeta Gundam and the returning MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, RX-178 Gundam Mk-II and Gundam-like MSN-00100 Hyaku Shiki, the group is nicknamed the Gundam Team. As such, this became the first of a number of Gundam series where a team of Gundam mobile suits fight alongside each other regularly. The climax takes place at Side 3 in the Battle of Axis. Out of the major Zeta Gundam characters, only recurring captain Bright Noa and Axis leader Haman Karn make more than cameo appearances in ZZ; Char Aznable's planned appearance was canceled when Tomino was given the go-ahead to do the Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack movie. Yoshiyuki Tomino's original plan for the show which involved Char's return was neither revealed though Glemy's sudden change in motivation seems to give a hint that he fills in for him at the end, nor does Tomino himself remember it and aside from the openings, Amuro Ray does not make an appearance in the series either. The alternate ending presented in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation retcons the UC Gundam Universe, possibly eliminating the events of ZZ Gundam.

UC 0088, la bataille de Gryps entre l'AEUG et les Titans a fait des ravages. L'AEUG a subit de lourdes pertes : le pilote du Hyaku Shiki Quattro Bageena, alias Char Aznable est porté disparu, Kamille Bidan, pilote du Zeta Gundam, est devenu inapte à quoique ce soit, les dommages subis par le vaisseau sont lourds. L'Argama décide donc d'abord de placer Kamille en hôpital, et pour cela ils se dirigent vers la colonie la plus proche : Shangri-La de Side 1. Cependant, sur Axis, Haman Karn profite de l'affaiblissement de la Fédération pour lancer son mouvement de résurrection de Zeon : Neo Zeon. Sur Shangri-La, l'arrivée de l'Argama est suivie par une bande de jeunes ferrailleurs, pour la plupart orphelins, qui décident d'aller voler le Zeta Gundam qui se trouve à bord du vaisseau avec l'espoir de le revendre. Cependant, une série d'évènement fera que notre bande de jeune deviendront les héros de la guerre contre Neo Zeon, avec Judau Ashta aux commandes du Zeta Gundam...

Anno 0088 UC, la guerra civile tra l'AEUG ed i Titani si è appena conclusa con lo smantellamento della élite militare federale, ma Haman Karn ed i reduci di Zeon di base sull'asteroide Axis sono ancora intenzionati a far rivivere la gloria del Principato e degli Zabi. Proclamatisi Esercito di Neo Zeon dichiarano quindi guerra alla disastrata Federazione Terrestre, ma si troveranno di fronte ancora una volta l'AEUG. L'organizzazione è però uscita decimata dallo scontro precedente e, bisognosa di forze fresche, non esita a reclutare anche giovanissimi piloti, come il quindicenne raccoglitore di detriti di Shangri-La, una colonia di Side 1, di nome Judau Ashta, ed i suoi amici. Insieme piloteranno i mobile suit del Gundam Team, tra cui il nuovo potentissimo MSZ-010 Gundam ZZ.

宇宙世紀0088年、宇宙連邦軍内部から派生した軍閥同士であるエゥーゴとティターンズの戦いは、エゥーゴの勝利に終わった。 だがこの内戦の爪痕は大きく、疲弊しきった地球圏は再び連邦政府を中心に、その復興に懸命だった。 その矢先、旧ジオン公国軍残党内の最大勢力、ネオ・ジオンの動きが活発化。 地球圏の制圧を企て、本格的な侵攻作戦を展開してきた。 エゥーゴを中心とする地球側の残存兵力は少なく、苦戦は必至かと思われたが･･････。 そんな中、サイド１のコロニー“シャングリラ”に修理の為寄港していた、 エゥーゴの強襲巡洋艦アーガマと偶然行動を共にすることになったジャンク屋の少年、ジュドー・アーシタ。 エゥーゴとネオ・ジオンの戦いに巻き込まれ翻弄される中で、 ジュドーは戦いの中で新たなニュータイプとして覚醒していく。

콜로니 샹그리라에서 고철수집을 하며 살아가는 소년 쥬도. 그에게는 생사고락을 함께해온 좋은 동료들과 누구보다도 아끼는 여동생 리나가 있다. 그러던 어느 날. 네오지온과의 싸움에 상처입은 아가마가 샹그리라의 항구에 입항하게 되고 그곳에서 폐인이 된 카미유 비단과의 조우할 때까지도 쥬도는 앞으로의 자신의 운명에 대해 전혀 눈치채지 못한다. 전 티탄즈의 대원 야잔 게블에게 속아 Z 건담을 강탈하려다 실패한 쥬도 일행. 이 강탈미수 사건과 콜로니 안에서 우연히 마주친 네오지온의 함장 마슈마와의 결투를 계기로 아가마의 일원이 된다. 이후 쥬도는 플을 비롯한 여러사람의 만남과 하만 칸의 네오지온과의 싸움을 거듭하며 한 사람의 전사로서 성장해가는데..

故事讲述0088年6月6日，新吉翁军向地球空降先遣部队，经两个月时间的活动，于8月1日正式发动对地球进攻。8月29日，新吉翁占领达卡尔，并将大量旧公国军及提坦斯残党收编。 此后一发不可收拾，10月31日，新吉翁实施卫星坠落战术，终于迫使联邦于11月24日同意将殖民卫星群SIDE 3让给新吉翁，以此作为吉翁从地球撤兵的条件。

Como continuación de Zeta Gundam, esta serie sigue una vez más la historia del acorazado Argama del Anti Earth Union Group (AEUG) después del episodio final de Zeta. Para luchar contra Axis Zeon, ahora llamado Neo Zeon, el Capitán Bright Noa recluta a un grupo de recolectores de chatarra adolescentes liderados por el ruidoso pero poderoso Newtype Judau Ashta para pilotar los trajes móviles de Argama. Ahora luciendo una alineación del gigante MSZ-010 Double Zeta Gundam y el MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, RX-178 Gundam Mk-II y MSN-00100 Hyaku Shiki similar a Gundam, el grupo recibe el sobrenombre de Gundam Team. Como tal, este se convirtió en el primero de una serie de series de Gundam en las que un equipo de trajes móviles de Gundam luchan juntos regularmente. El clímax tiene lugar en el lado 3 de la batalla de Axis.

宇宙世紀0088年，在格里布斯戰爭後元氣大傷的奧古，而奧古主力戰艦之一阿伽瑪（此詞來自梵文「阿含」）進入Side1香格里拉殖民地進行補給與修理時，從事資源回收業的主角捷多·亞西塔與他的朋友們企圖偷走Z-高達拿去賣錢，由這個事件開始，捷多與朋友們被捲入了奧古與新吉恩的衝突當中，在故事中期哈曼·卡恩發動第一次新吉恩抗戰，抗戰後期格雷米佔領阿克西斯發動叛亂為故事的完結。

Nach den Ereignissen von Z Gundam ist das Militär von der Erde und die AEUG stark geschwächt. Diese Situation will nun Neo-Zeon, Überlebende des Herzogtums Zeon, die vom Asteroiden Axis aus operieren, dazu nutzen, um an die Kontrolle des besiedelten Weltalls zu kommen.
