Law & Order, the longest running crime series and the second longest-running drama series in the history of American broadcast television, started its 18th season on NBC in the winter of 2008. The brainchild of creator Dick Wolf, Law & Order is the most successful brand in the history of primetime television; the winner of the 1997 Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series; ties Cheers and M*A*S*H for the most consecutive best series nominations (eleven) and the longest-running drama series currently on American television. The series has also turned into one of entertainment's preeminent brands using a distinct ripped from the headlines format, and has spawned the successful spinoffs Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Crime & Punishment and Law & Order: Trial by Jury.

Overview:	Die Serie macht dort weiter, wo andere Krimiserien aufhören: Es wird nicht nur gezeigt, wie ein Verbrechen von der Polizei aufgeklärt wird, sondern auch, wie die New Yorker Justiz den Fall weiterverfolgt. Die Detectives Mike Logan und Max Greevey sind auf den Straßen New Yorks unterwegs, um Verbrecher zu stellen. Unter anderem haben sie mit brutalen High-Society-Morden, Unterwelt-Skandalen, korrupten Politikern, Rassismus, Vergewaltigungen oder zerrütteten Familien zu tun. Die Bezirksstaatsanwälte Ben Stone und Paul Robinette versuchen, mit ihrem Chef Adam Schiff den Angeklagten zu überführen und zu verurteilen. In kniffliger Kleinarbeit wird die Beweisführung geschildert, die in einem dramatischen Showdown vor Gericht endet. Zu Beginn der zweiten Saison wird Sergeant Greevey getötet. Seine Arbeit übernimmt Detective Cerreta. Neu hinzu kommt Dr. Elizabeth Olivet. Zu Beginn der dritten Saison übernimmt Detective Lennie Briscoe die Position von Detective Cerreta. In der vierten Saison ersetzt die Anwältin Claire Kincaid ihren Kollegen Paul Robinette, und Lieutenant Anita van Buren kommt für Captain Cragen. Detective Mike Logan ermittelt auch in der Folge „Recht und Unordnung“ der Serie „Homicide“ (siehe dort). Die Handlungsstränge der beiden Episoden „Der Giftgas-Anschlag“, „Abgrund des Herzens“ und „Achtung, Sonderermittler“ werden jeweils innerhalb von Episoden der Serie „Homicide“ fortgesetzt. Die New Yorker Cops Reynaldo Curtis, Claire Kincaid, Lennie Briscoe, Jamie Ross und Jack McCoy sind in diesen „Homicide“-Folgen mit dabei. Im Gegenzug spielen die Detectives der Serie „Homicide“ John Munch, Frank Pembleton, Tim Bayliss, Leslie Drake, Ed Danvers, Al Giardello und Paul Falsone in den Folgen von „Law & Order“ mit. In den USA gibt es bereits drei Spin-Offs der Serie: “Law & Order: New York” (1999), in der u.a. Dan Florek seine Rolle als Don Cragen fortführt, “Criminal Intent - Verbrechen im Visier” (2001; siehe jeweils dort) mit Vincent D’Onofrio und Kathryan Erbe - und das kurzlebige "Law & Order: Trial by jury" (2005), das bisher nicht in Deutschland ausgestrahlt worden ist.
