2003年5月9日、鹿児島内之浦宇宙空間観測所。小惑星探査機「はやぶさ」を搭載したM-Vロケットが発射された。緊張の面持ちで見守っていたプロジェクトマネージャーの山口教授（渡辺謙）は、さまざまな思いを巡らせながら、これからスタートする壮大なプロジェクトに対し、決意を新たにしていた。そして2005年、小惑星「イトカワ」の姿をとらえたはやぶさはタッチ・ダウンに成功するも、化学エンジンの不良、姿勢制御が不能に陥るなどのトラブルに見舞われてしまう。
