Traumatisée par un événement tragique dont elle se croit la seule responsable, l'urgentologue Jeanne quitte sa demeure montréalaise sans prévenir son entourage et roule sans but, en proie à une grande détresse psychologique. Sur le quai de Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, alors qu'elle s'apprête à se jeter à l'eau, surgit François, un jeune homme taciturne qui, après l'avoir dissuadé de poser ce geste désespéré, décide de veiller sur elle. Vivant dans un petit village de Charlevoix, François fait une neuvaine à Sainte-Anne pour obtenir la guérison de sa grand-mère au seuil de la mort. Intriguée par ce rituel et par la personnalité de son protecteur, Jeanne reprend peu à peu goût à la vie. C'est alors que François lui demande de venir en aide à sa grand-mère.
