1952（昭和27）年、夏の東京。小説家の関口はちまたで広まる、産婦人科の大病院である久遠寺医院の娘・梗子が、妊娠20カ月目を迎えたのに一向に出産する気配がなく、しかも彼女の夫は1年半前に医院の密室から忽然と消え、以来、行方不明となっているという不思議な噂を耳にする。雑誌の依頼で事件を取材することになった関口は、古本屋の店主にして神社の神主でもある、博覧強記の友人・京極堂に相談を持ちかける。
