עלילת הסדרה מתמקדת בנערה מרדנית וחצופה בשם אלכס המקבלת עונש חינוכי לכתוב בעיתון בית הספר, בגין התנהגותה הלא הולמת. אלכס מתמודדת עם מות אימה, ומנסה בכל דרך אפשרית להתחמק מהמטלה אשר נכפתה עליה ואפילו לשכנע את חברה הטוב, רובי, להחליף אותה. ניסיונות ההתחמקות נכשלים והיא מוצאת את עצמה כותבת טורים בעיתון בית הספר.
