In der Dokumentation bereist der britische Fernsehstar Montagu „Monty“ Denis Wyatt Don (Monty Don) alle Kontinente der Welt und präsentiert dabei deren schönste Gärten. Er zeigt, wie sie sich in ihre Umgebung einfügen und welchen besonderen Einflüssen die Gärten ausgesetzt sind. Auf der ersten Etappe seiner Reise besucht Monty Don die mehr als 2000 Jahre alten, antiken, schwimmenden Gärten in Xochunilco, den botanische Kakteen-Garten in Oaxaca, die prächtigen Gartenanlagen des Surrealisten Edward James und die einzigartigen Gärten auf den Märkten von Havanna.
In his first journey, Monty travels to two very different but neighbouring countries. Mexico is one of the most plant-rich and artistic cultures on the planet - from the ancient water gardens of Mexico City, to the modernist extremes of Luis Barragan and a surrealist fantasy hidden in the rainforest. Traveling to Cuba, Monty finds that the crumbling colonial grandeur of its urban landscape is now host to a very green revolution.
