Babar, the King of the Elephants tells his children the story of his family and his early life in the jungle. Babar recounts how his life was changed after his mother was killed by a hunter.
Forced to run away from the jungle by the Hunter, Babar makes his way to the City only to find it just as dangerous and confusing. Motherless and alone, Babar is befriended by the Old Lady, who tries to teach him how to fit into her world, with his ultimate test at a society dinner in his honour.

As the new King of the Elephants, Babar's first decision is to build a city for his people. Not only does Rataxes want to build a city too, but Babar also has to deal with the countless problems that his obsession with building his city quickly raises.
When the Hunter returns to threaten Babar's kingdom, Babar takes matters into his own hands and gathers Rataxes and all the jungle's inhabitants. They manage to fight the Hunter and repel him once and for all.
At a ball in the palace, Babar's advisers Cornelius and Pompadour jeopardise Babar and Céleste's relationship by forcing Babar to ask the daughter of a high dignitary to dance instead of Céleste.
Babar wants to rebuild an old theatre in memory of his mother. However, all his subjects soon get excited about building a rocket to the moon, which would beat Rataxes' rocket to the punch.
Babar decides to welcome a young boy from the circus to the palace. But when the boy regrets his decision and wants to return to the circus, he discovers that he may be too late. The circus has just been captured by Rataxes.
Times are hard for Babar because Rataxes is blocking deliveries of grenades to Célesteville. But when Babar finds a warthog in the jungle, Rataxes suddenly wants to negotiate. What Babar doesn't know yet is that the warthog belongs to Rataxes' wife and that he must get it back before she realises it's missing.
Babar organises a big ballet show in Célestevile. But the star of the show, a capricious prima ballerina, causes all kinds of problems. She turns Babar's production into a disaster.
Babar is scheduled to perform a duet with a great pianist at a concert. However, he refuses to admit that the piece of music is too hard for him, so he procrastinates practicing until he feels so guilty that it begins to affect his job as King.
When Babar's crown goes missing, Zéphir improvises as a detective to help him. But they both start to panic when they discover that all the evidence points to Babar's closest friends, and that stealing his crown is just the first step in robbing him of his throne.

Once Babar and his family journey through this final land, they should be able to reach the fabled Land of Happiness. That, of course, is easier said than done!
