After a disastrous incident with the barbecue, Tom Whyte invites his neighbours Brendan and Helen over for a relaxed dinner party to say sorry. With the arrival of best friend Roddy and his parents unexpectedly descending on the house, the pressure's on Tom and it's not looking good. Things take a turn for the worse when wife Elaine arrives back from work and starts on the wine, Drew is sick on the trampoline and mother Mary gets stuck in the bathroom. By the time Brendan and Helen walk up the drive, Tom's at his wit's end and it looks like he'll owe them another apology very soon.
The everyday eccentricity of the Whyte family continues as Tom tries his hand at a bit of DIY ahead of a relaxing evening with his family. However, things are never straightforward where the Whyte family is concerned, and it soon descends into mayhem... Within hours, they are stranded in a lay-by and discover that they have left their youngest child Drew at home alone. Whilst waiting for help to arrive, things take a turn for the worse and they get into a spot of bother with the police.
After a national competition to find The House Husband Of The Year is announced, Tom finds himself being involved in a rigorous training schedule. His mother Mary becomes his trainer and with the help of Pat, Roddy, Elaine and his sons, Tom goes head-to-head with his neighbour Tim in the final.
After Elaine’s ex-boyfriend called Karl comes to stay, Tom finds it really hard not to feel jealous. Karl manages to enamour himself to everyone around him which makes matters worse.
Tom tries to go back to basics and force some good old-fashioned fun on the rest of the family. He dislikes his family’s dependence on gadgets, and decides to hide all technological equipment so that the family are forced to use their imaginations more.
The balance of the Whyte household is rocked when Elaine makes a surprise announcement.
