A novela começa em 1962, quando Herculano Quintanilha é traído por seu companheiro de trapaças, Nestor da Silva, conhecido como Neco. Neco foge com o dinheiro da reforma da igreja, deixando Herculano humilhado. Ele foge para o Rio de Janeiro, prometendo voltar um dia para buscar sua esposa e filho. Doze anos depois, em 1974, Herculano trabalha como tarólogo em uma churrascaria e reconhece Neco entre os clientes. Cheio de mágoa, Herculano espera a oportunidade de se vingar.
