Charles, Jenny and Hubert arrive at a settlement based around a working mill. The community there has been influenced and led by former personnel headhunter Frank Garner (Edward Underdown) and Rutna, a young Indian woman. Their guiding principle is the belief that man died (during 'the death') and now needs to be re-born to a new way of life. Frank makes several failed attempts to speak to Charles alone and is clearly uneasy about something. When Charles, Jenny and Hubert's horses are poisoned with yew branches they have no choice but to stay another day...
Un mulino in funzione incuriosisce Charles, Jenny e Hubert che decidono di andarlo a vedere più da vicino. Vengono avvicinati da un uomo e un ragazzo vestiti come monaci che li avvisano che nell'insediamento non è permesso portare armi. Dopo avere posato i fucili, Charles chiede se da quelle parti è passato un uomo alto e biondo e dopo avere scoperto che nessuno ha visto Greg, Jenny vorrebbe subito ripartire, ma sopraggiunge un uomo più anziano, Frank, che invita i tre viaggiatori a fermarsi per la notte. Nella fattoria tutti indossano una tonaca, girano disarmati e sono vegetariani. Henry, un altro membro della congregazione, spiega che secondo loro la vecchia razza umana è morta perché potesse rinascerne una migliore. Prima di andare a letto, Jenny viene avvicinata una ragazza che la avverte che Frank potrebbe convincere Charles a restare.
