Fray Bentos a new high tech weapon at the time was a Mark IV tank that got stuck on the enemy lines. The crew battled for several days bravely defending from the German onslaught while under fire from the British who were trying to stop the tank falling into German hands. Captain Donald Richardson, despite being injured, bravely led his crew to safety and they became the most highly decorated tank crew at the time. December 20th 1943, a badly shot up B-17 struggled to stay in the air, at the controls Charlie Brown. Passing low over a German airfield, it was spotted by Franz Stigler who raced to intercept, just one victory away from receiving the Knight's Cross. What happened next would be called one of the most incredible acts of kindness between enemies. Thanks to Adam Makos for allowing us to use the footage of the first meeting of Stigler and Brown. The Flying Tigers. First rate American pilots who in search of adventure went to help the Chinese break Japanese air superiority. Under the command of Claire Lee Chennault they were one of the first to strike back against Japan after the attack at Pearl Harbor. On Christmas day 1941 Bill Reed took part in a major battle that was to mark the change of tide in the domination of the air over Burma and China. Neel Kearby in his P-47 Thunderbolt the “Fiery Ginger IV” was close to beating the record for victories. Many considered the Thunderbolt inferior to the nimble Japanese planes. But in the hands of Kearby and his friend Bill Dunham , it’s excellent diving capability and heavy guns proved to be deadly. The newer P-38s and P-51s were being replaced and Kearby knew, if he could beat a 26 victory record then the resulting press coverage could save his beloved P-47 to the end of the war. Bill Dunham witnessed the downing of Kearby but went on to commit an incredible act of chivalry in the otherwise incredibly tough Pacific Theater. Lauri Törni also known as Larry Thorne had an incredible military career that spanned across 3 nation's armies. His life was defined by fighting communism. As a born fighter and a highly skilled soldier this was something he excelled at. Thorne became one of the first green berets and served in Vietnam where he made his final battle. The All American, high over the skies of Tunisia was practically split in two by a BF-109. A testament to the ruggedness of these birds was that this one kept flying and got all the crew back safely to Biskra air base. Over the years many versions of this story have been embellished with the mistruths. We tried to stick to the facts for this one, leaving out embellishments such as the lashing together of parachutes to keep the tail on and falsehoods such as landing in England over 2000 miles away ! Late in the war a clash of technologies occurred in the skies over Germany. The Luftwaffe's wonder weapon that was the Me-262 fought against the allies pinnacle of propellor driven technology, the P-51D Mustang. During the defense of Leningrad a well laid trap resulted in a spectacular victory with just 1 tank taking out 22 German Tanks and 2 Anti-tank guns. Zinoviy Kolobanov commanded his KV-1 to deal a crushing blow to the invaders. In total, in and around "Tank Alley" 5 Russian KV-1s destroyed 43 tanks. In the skies over Korea at the height of the cold war, Soviet fighter aces secretly fought against the UN forces. Northwest Korea over the Yalu river, also known as Mig Alley is where most of these engagements occurred. The US pilots named these talented aviators "Honchos". The Head Honcho that patrolled over Mig Alley, was nicknamed "Casey Jones" or "Ol' Casey". Flying a MIG 15 bis with a special paint job, Casey Jones was none other than Soviet WW2 pilot Sergei Kramarenko. Thanks to Vika for translating the information from the Russian sources. The French defense against the German Blitzkrieg usually gets told one way. However there were pockets of resistance where the French fought tough successful battles against the German invaders. HMS Campbeltown, an obsolete WW1 destroyer was sent on a one way mission to St Nazaire. A floating time bomb, its intent was to destroy the only dry dock capable of repairing Tirpitz on the North Atlantic coast. An incredibly important mission that was seen by many to be too dangerous. In many circles Operation Chariot has become known as the Greatest Raid of all time. It came at great cost and was achieved only through the extreme bravery of those involved. The AT-Super Tiger or AT-ST was a little known weapon that was only used operationally once on April 1st in Hoth-Stadt. Audie Murphy was awarded the Medal of Honor for his action in January 1945, near Holtzwihr, France. When his company was forced to retreat Murphy remained behind directing artillery fire on the enemy infantry and armor. While not physically large Murphy at just 5 feet 5 inches (1.65m) and 110 lb (50kg) managed to single-handedly turn back the Germans and was awarded the medal of honor for his "Conspicuous Gallantry and Intrepidity Involving Risk of Life Above and Beyond the Call of Duty In Action With the Enemy". 1968 in Vietnam and Master Sergeant Roy Benevidez undertook an incredibly brave rescue of a special forces team that had been surrounded by an NVA Infantry Battalion of over 1000 men. Armed with just a knife and his medical bag, Benevidez threw himself into the thick of the action and conducted a rescue attempt that resulted in him saving the lives of at least 8 men. When presented the Medal of Honor by President Reagan, the President turned to the press and said, "If the story of his heroism were a movie script, you would not believe it". Requiring exceptional precision the plan was for Mosquitos to conduct low level accurate targeting of the prison walls to help French and Allied prisoners escape. A rarity for the crews it gave them the opportunity to immediately save lives with an air operation. Wing Commander Tait’s briefing before the raid was short. The objective was the same as before, target and sink the Tirpitz. Operation Catechism was an RAF air raid with specially adapted Lancaster bombers of the RAF’s elite 617 and 9 Squadrons attacked Tirpitz in a remote fjord in Norway, it resulted in the final destruction of the fearsome German battleship Tirpitz. Tallboys released, from 14,000 feet accelerated to 750 mph approaching the speed of sound. Minutes later the Tirpitz – pride of the Kriegsmarine was no longer. Nicknamed “the Stinger”, Corporal Stein would take this improvised weapon to the sands and volcanic ash of Iwo Jima. While here, Corporal Stein would lead one relentless charge after another on Japanese pill boxes as he unleashed the Stinger which could fire at rates of 1200-1500 rounds per minute. On 8 separate occasions, he would brave the deadly enemy fire in order to run back to the beach for more ammunition and on each occasion, he would pick up a wounded Marine to bring back with him. For his actions on Iwo Jima, Corporal Tony Stein with the aid of his Stinger was awarded the Medal of Honor and a unique place in the history of the Corps ability to adapt in battle. He flew more than 1,400 missions enabling him to score an astonishing 352 victories. Hartmann’s reputation had grown so immense that when many Soviet pilots saw the notorious Mes-serschmitt Bf 109 approaching they would turn tail and head home. USS West Virginia was heavily damaged by bombs, torpedoes and was on fire. Being a Black American he wasn’t weapons trained, this did not stop him, he jumped into the fight at the helm of a .50-caliber machine gun blasting away at Japanese planes until he ran out of ammo. Out of a crew of 1300, Doris Miller was one of the last three men to leave the sinking ship rescuing men as he swam ashore. His actions defending his country against the Japanese made him perhaps the most famous Black Americans of WWII. Outnumbered and outgunned, another Tiger 1 and StuG turn toward Major Cain. With his complete loathing and hatred of tanks Major Cain picks up his trusty PIAT and goes out alone to deal with them. Injured and out of PIAT rounds he picks up a two-inch motor and takes on the advancing Panzer grenadiers and their tanks. His incessant bombardment and aggression forced the enemy into full retreat. Throughout the whole course of the Battle of Arnhem, Major Cain showed superb gallantry. His powers of endurance and leadership were the admiration of all his fellow officers and men. Cain was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions. The Finns should have been terrified, but the Finnish had something that the Russians didn’t, a humble farmer-turned-sniper named Simo Häyhä. He pulled his old gun out of storage and waited for the Soviets. The Winter War lasted roughly 100 days, in that time, Häyhä eliminated 505 soldiers, an average of over 5 a day.
