The story begins in the city of Vienna in 1907, as the city holds a lavish birthday celebration for its beloved Princess Flora. The princess entertains a variety of suitors from around the world who have come to propose marriage. Also on hand for the celebration is Phoenix, a handsome, gentlemanly jewel thief who has his eye on stealing the princess's precious gemstone, the "Smile of the Amazon." Upset with Phoenix's brash manner, Princess Flora then drops the ring holding her gemstone into a cooked fish and throws it out the window, to the shock of everyone present.
Meanwhile, a young teenaged orphan named Honey Honey is working as a waitress. Her pet cat and constant companion, Lily, spies the fish that the princess threw out the window and proceeds to eat the entire fish, thus swallowing the ring. Since Princess Flora has declared that whichever of her suitors successfully returns the ring to her shall become her husband, the princess's suitors and Phoenix immediately fan out all over the city pursuing Lily and her owner, Honey Honey.
Phoenix catches up with Honey and Lily and helps them hide from the princess's suitors. Honey proceeds to tell the handsome jewel thief the story of how she was orphaned and brought up in a convent, and of how she befriended Lily, who, like her, was abandoned. Phoenix then tries to persuade Honey to sell Lily to him, but Honey, who is still unaware that Lily has swallowed the princess's ring, furiously refuses and immediately flees. Honey and Lily hide in the basket of a hot-air balloon, which soon lifts off with Phoenix and Princess Flora's suitors still in hot pursuit. Thus begins an adventure in which Honey and Lily are pursued by Phoenix, Princess Flora, and her suitors to various cities around the world, including Paris, New York City, Oslo, London, Monte Carlo, Tokyo, and Gibraltar. Along the way, Honey falls in love with Phoenix and tries to keep Lily out of the clutches of the selfish, vain princess.

Pollen est une petite fille qui vit dans la ville de Viennes. Un jour de l'année 1907, sa chatte Lilas avale une pierre précieuse appartenant à la princesse Ariane. Dès lors, Pollen et son animal de compagnie sont poursuivis par des hommes de la princesse (un policier allemand, un émir, un soldat français et un indien!) à qui celle-ci a promis sa main en échange du bijou volé. Pollen n'a pas d'autres moyens que de voyager de pays en pays pour protéger la vie de son chat. Heureusement, elle peut compter sur le bon chat Galopin, qui est amoureux de sa petite chatte, pour lui venir en aide!
Fiorellino (Honey in originale) è un'adolescente che lavora come cameriera nella Vienna d'inizio secolo. Un giorno Lili, la gattina di Fiorellino, ingoia il Sorriso dell'Amazzone, un anello di valore inestimabile appartenente all'arrogante principessa Florence, che l'ha infilato in un pesce fritto per poi gettarlo dalla finestra promettendosi in sposa a colui che glielo riporterà. Perché a Lili non venga fatto alcun male, Fiorellino fugge via, mentre in tutta la città si scatena una vasta caccia al gatto e alla sua padroncina da parte dei pretendenti alla mano della principessa Florence, decisi a recuperare il suo anello e conquistare così il diritto a sposarla.
Tra i vari individui che si mettono sulle tracce di Fiorellino e Lili, uno in particolare sembra essere interessato, più all'anello in verità, che non alla bella Florence: il misterioso Fenice, ladro gentiluomo, che farà innamorare di sé l'ingenua Fiorellino. La caccia al gatto intanto si estende a varie città intorno al mondo perché Fiorellino e Lili, cercando di nascondersi, in realtà s'infilano nel cesto di una mongolfiera che s'invola in cielo. Da Parigi a New York, da Oslo a Londra, passando per Monte Carlo, Tokyo e Gibilterra, la vicenda porta non solo al recupero del tanto agognato anello, ma anche alla scoperta che Fiorellino è la sorella minore della principessa Florence grazie a un tatuaggio sul piede.

Viena, 1907. A cidade dá um banquete como comemoração ao aniversário da Princesa Flora. Vários líderes e pessoas de renome lhe oferecem casamento. O belo ladrão Fênix, disfarçado, está entre os presentes e está interessado em roubar o anel da princesa, uma jóia dada a ela por um milionário brasileiro chamada "o Sorriso do Amazonas". Ele arma uma cilada ao ferir o orgulho da princesa alegando que sua beleza é reflexo do brilho do seu anel. Ultrajada, a princesa esconde sua jóia num peixe e o atira pela janela, chocando a todos os presentes. Fênix revela seu disfarce e sai atrás do anel. A princesa Flora, então, promete casamento àquele que lhe restituir a jóia.
Enquanto isso, a jovem órfã Honey Honey (no Brasil, adaptada como "Favo de Mel") trabalhava como garçonete no banquete da princesa. Sem que ela saiba, sua gatinha, Lily, acaba comendo o peixe jogado pela princesa (e consequentemente, a jóia), o que a torna alvo de todos os pretendentes da princesa e do ladrão Fênix.
"Favo de Mel" consegue fugir com a gata num balão. A série toda é caracterizada pela fuga da garota através dos quatro cantos do mundo (incluindo Paris, New York, Oslo, Londres, Monte Carlo e Gibraltar), sendo perseguida pela Princesa Flora, os quatro pretendentes da princesa (um índio americano(Jerônimo), o rei da Bélgica( ou Rei Picareta), um militar alemão(Fritz Gestapo) e um milionário do petróleo(Paulo Petro)) e o atraente e galante ladrão de jóias Fênix e seu gatinho Raul, que apesar de alegar perseguir a garota para obter o anel, volta e meia ajuda a órfãzinha e acaba se apaixonando por ela. O mais embaraçoso é que Favo só vem, a saber, do engolimento da jóia no terceiro episódio da série.
