明末，吳三桂引清兵入關，闖王李自成被困九宮山，身旁四大勇士其中三人苗、范、田突圍請救兵，回來時李自成竟不知所蹤，胡慘氏被三人誤為內奸而遭斬殺。從此，四大勇士的後人便為此互相仇殺。 期間各人亦因訪尋闖王寶藏，引致重重明爭暗鬥，糾纏不斷。田家後人田歸農為獨吞寶藏，不惜挑撥胡、苗兩家後人胡一刀及苗人鳳兩大高手的決鬥，唯二人卻一見如故，惺惺相識。田歸農為達目的遂暗中下毒，令苗人鳳在比武期間誤殺胡一刀!胡一刀死後，妻子魏映雪亦殉夫自盡，遺下初生兒子胡斐由僕人平阿四獨力撫養成人，為報父仇，胡斐努力苦練家傳的胡家刀法。在闖蕩江湖期間，更結識了包括紅花會的一眾武林人士，同時亦先後與袁紫衣、程靈素、苗人鳳之女苗若蘭邂逅，展開數段糾纏不清的戀情。 最後，胡斐終與苗人鳳在雪山堡上一決勝負，究竟是否能解決上代恩怨呢？
