講述了目不識丁的陶默在一代才子顧射的幫助下，逐步實現成為一個「好官」的理想。[2] 陶墨本是一不識字的紈絝子弟，因為老父親的離世，他才知道學會珍惜，為了完成老父的遺願，他與管家書童一起到丹陽縣透過用錢捐官五千兩銀成為了當地的縣官。立志「不做清官做好官，因為清官不一定是好官，但好官一定是清官」的人生觀，但接著捲入的官場複雜門道將挑戰他的意志。
