Judge Milton "Hardcase" Hardcastle - retired. After years of working for a judicial system that put guilty criminals back on the streets due to technicalities, he takes the law into his own hands by searching them out. Aiding him is a one time car thief now professional driver Mark "Skid" McCormick. McCormick, brought before the judge's final case, is arrested for an "honest steal." Hardcastle gives him the choice of prison or helping him with the 200 plus cold cases. Relunctanly choosing to aid the judge, Hardcastle and McCormick start a loose friendship of justice and con in order to finally those who deserved it in prison.

Cette série met en scène le juge en retraite Hardcastle et un ex-pilote de course automobile en liberté surveillée, Mark McCormick, qui, au volant da la Coyote X (Cody Coyote), poursuivent les criminels ayant échappé à Hardcastle pour faute de preuve du temps où celui-ci était encore en fonction.

Milton Hardcastle è un ex-giudice che ha lasciato la sua professione con il rimorso di non essere riuscito a ingabbiare vari criminali che se la sono cavata tramite cavilli burocratici. In una delle sue ultime udienze si trova di fronte Mark McCormick, ex-pilota e ladro d'auto, accusato ingiustamente dell'omicidio dell'amico Johnny Johnson; Hardcastle si convince della sua innocenza e lo prende in custodia stringendo con lui un patto: se Mark avesse fatto da braccio destro a Hardcastle in una personale lotta ai criminali dei quali teneva ancora i dati in archivio, Hardcastle lo avrebbe aiutato a trovare il vero omicida di Johnson. Con la morte dell'amico McCormick eredita l'automobile "Coyote X", una kitcar basata sulla McLaren M6BGT, con motore Porsche 914 e chassis della VW Beetle, progettata proprio da Johnson e McCormick; l'intera serie è infatti principalmente basata sull'inseguimento automobilistico. Nella seconda e terza stagione la Coyote X era basata sulla De Lorean DMC-12.
