Mendoza, un oficial de la Armada Española, contempla tristemente el crucero "Cervera", desguazado después de prestar gloriosos servicios durante tantos años. Recuerda con nostalgia la historia del barco, tan unida a su propia historia. Allí conoció a Mary, su novia, y cuando ambos se creían los seres más felices del mundo, el estallido de la Guerra civil los separó bruscamente.
Mendoza, an officer of the Spanish Navy, sadly contemplates the "Cervera" cruise, scrapped after serving glorious services for many years. He remembers with nostalgia the history of the ship, so close to him. There he met Mary, his girlfriend, and when they both believed themselves to be the happiest beings in the world, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War severed them abruptly. Mary went to take refuge with her family to the besieged barracks of Simancas, to which "El Cervera" was ordered to bomb when the enemy took it by assault.
