Ein Alpendorf kurz vor dem ersten Weltkrieg. Der verwitwete Förster Rufman hat für seine Söhne Friedel und Elias wenig Verständnis. Beide kommen nur schwer mit sich zurecht. Eines Tages taucht ein Fremder auf, dessen Neugier die misstrauischen Dörfler verwirrt. Nur Elias fühlt sich zu ihm hingezogen. Als im Dorf ein Mord geschieht, fällt der Verdacht bald auf die Försterbuben.
