Diógenes, vive retirado del mundo, cultivando una extraña filosofía, cuya realización práctica consiste en sustituir el complicado juego monetario por el trueque de mercancías. Su único medio de vida es su melonar y vive tranquilo y feliz, hasta que, primero, un desvalido chiquillo y luego el amor de una joven titiritera, irrumpen en su vida.
