瀬戸内海の長島にある国立ハンセン病療養所・長島愛生園。かづゑさんは10歳で入所してから約80年、ずっとこの島で生きてきた。病気の影響で手の指や足を切断し、視力もほとんど残っていないが、周囲の手を借りながら買い物も料理も自分で行う。患者同士のいじめに遭うなどつらかった子ども時代には、家族の愛情とたくさんの愛読書が、彼女を絶望の淵から救ってくれた。そして夫の孝行さんと出会ってからは、海沿いの夫婦寮で自然とともに暮らしてきた。
