Репортер, собирая материал для статьи, попадает в нестандартную ситуацию: он находит секретные файлы ЦРУ, в которых четко прописано причастие госорганов к транспортировке кокаина в особо крупных размерах в Калифорнию. Существование репортера становится нежелательным для всех, кто хоть как-то соприкасался с «кокаиновым» делом. После широкой огласки статьи убить журналиста просто так нельзя, ведь тогда правдивость материала станет очевидной, зато ведомство может обвинить репортера в другом…

Quando l'avvenente pupa di un boss del narcotraffico avvicina il reporter Gary Webb, l'ultima cosa a cui questi pensa è di essere vicino a uno scoop sensazionale. E invece, risalendo la catena alimentari degli spacciatori nicaraguensi arriva a scoprire un verità che scotta: la CIA consentiva o agevolava lo spaccio negli Stati Uniti per finanziare i Contra in chiave anti-sandinista. Quando Webb pubblica il suo dossier il bubbone scoppia: prima piovono consensi ed elogi, ma ben presto la CIA passa al contrattacco e la vita privata e professionale di Webb diventa insostenibile.

The film opens as ''San Jose Mercury News'' reporter Gary Webb interviews drug dealer Ronny Quail, who is outraged that the government used civil asset forfeiture to keep his house even after he was acquitted. Webb's ensuing article about the abuses of forfeiture garners repeated phone calls from a woman named Coral, whom he agrees to meet when she says she has documents that prove the government sponsored cocaine sales in the U.S. Coral gives Webb a transcript of grand jury testimony (normally kept secret) which was accidentally released to her boyfriend, an accused drug dealer, during Discovery_(law). After Webb reveals to the prosecutor in the case that he has the transcript, the government drops the charges against Coral's boyfriend in order to protect their main witness: Oscar Danilo Blandón
