Divisé en quatre parties: La première partie, "Le dernier dîner de Noël", traite de la relation entre un vieil homme et une vieille femme, tous deux sans abri. La deuxième partie, "The Electric Floor Polisher", raconte l'histoire d'une femme obsédée par le polissage de ses planchers. La troisième partie est un intermède musical mettant en vedette Jeanne Moreau chantant «When Love Dies». La quatrième partie, «La vertu de la tolérance», concerne un vieil homme, sa jeune femme et comment ils se réconcilient quand elle a une liaison avec un homme de son âge.
