Le souffle révolutionnaire qu’a connu l’Amérique latine au XXe siècle doit beaucoup à la participation de millions de chrétiens, engagés dans les luttes politiques au nom de leur foi. Portés par la théologie de la libération, ils ont défié les régimes militaires et les oligarchies au péril de leur vie. À rebours de l’idée de la religion comme opium du peuple, le film part à la rencontre d’hommes et de femmes qui ont cru voir dans la révolution l’avènement du Royaume de Dieu, sur la terre plutôt qu’au ciel.
The revolutions that swept Latin America in the second half of the 20th century owe much to the participation of millions of Christians who engaged in political struggles in the name of their faith, paying a heavy toll for undermining the traditional relationship between the Church and power. Driven by Liberation theology, they challenged military regimes and oligarchies, risking their lives. Far from Marx's idea of religion as 'opium of the people', here the people fought for the advent of the Kingdom of God on Earth, rather than in Heaven.
Die Revolutionen, die Lateinamerika in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts erschütterten, verdanken sich zu einem großen Teil der Beteiligung von Millionen von Christen, die sich im Namen ihres Glaubens an politischen Kämpfen beteiligten und einen hohen Preis für die Untergrabung der traditionellen Beziehung zwischen Kirche und Macht zahlten. Angetrieben von der Befreiungstheologie forderten sie Militärregime und Oligarchien heraus und setzten dabei ihr Leben aufs Spiel. Weit entfernt von Marx' Vorstellung von der Religion als „Opium des Volkes“, kämpften die Menschen hier für das Kommen des Reiches Gottes auf der Erde und nicht im Himmel.
