Born free in Philadelphia in 1823, Mifflin Wistar Gibbs worked on the Underground Railroad and lectured with Frederick Douglass. Later, he owned a successful store during the California Gold Rush, served as a City Councilman in Victoria, British Columbia, became a lawyer and was the first black man elected as judge in the United States. Finally, he served as a US diplomat and founded a bank.
