Au cours d'une soirée dans un bar, Roger, sympathique représentant en cognac - et fin connaisseur - surprend une conversation téléphonique qui ne manque pas de l'intriguer, puis de l'inquiéter : « ... quelques balles de revolver dans la tête et elle sera morte illico... ». Affolé, Roger suit l'inconnu qui a pris sa voiture. Une poursuite acharnée s'engage. Roger arrive dans une mystérieuse propriété dans laquelle « l'assassin » disparaît pour y commettre son crime. Assommé par le tueur avec lequel il s'est battu et qu'il a empêché d'accomplir son crime, Roger reprend ses esprits, confortablement installé dans le living-room d'un vieux colonel, le colonel Van Booren...
