Años cincuenta. Lorenzo es un estudiante salmantino que acaba de pasar un verano en Inglaterra, donde ha descubierto otras formas de vida y otros horizontes, además de conocer a Berta, hija de un exiliado, por la que se siente atraído. A su regreso, el ambiente tradicional de su familia, sus amigos y su novia le resultan agobiantes. Se agudizan sus inquietudes en cartas dirigidas a esa Berta que quedó en el extranjero.
