Året är 1948. Johanna (22) bor på Vipeholms Sjukhus tillsammans med andra personer med funktionsnedsättningar. En dag blir hon blixtförälskad i Vilgot, en annan intagen. När rutinerna plötsligt ändras och Vilgot blir allt sjukare så börjar Johanna misstänka att det kan ha något med ett experiment att göra. Filmen är inspirerad av verkliga händelser.
