A hadügyminisztérium kutatási és fejlesztési intézetének hüllőkkel és kígyókkal foglalkozó részlegét felrobbantják 1990 novemberében. Senki nem gondol rá, hogy a csörgőkígyó egyik fajtája túléli a robbanást. Kis idő elteltével a kígyók elszaporodnak és tömegesen a felszínre törnek. Akiket megmarnak, azok belehalnak és az emberek egymást is megfertőzhetik. A kisvárost karantén alá vonják. Dr. David megszerzi az ellenszérumot felesége Catherine segítségével, így sikerül felvenni a harcot a gyilkos állatokkal.
