Born in 1971 into a bohemian, libertarian family, Winona Ryder - born Horowitz - grew up surrounded by books. The introverted and dreamy young girl, who attended drama school in San Francisco, found it difficult to fit in with her peers and at the age of 15 she landed her first film role in David Seltzer's "Lucas". Her performance was noticed by a certain Tim Burton, who chose her for the macabre comedy "Beetlejuice": her role as a gothic teenager suddenly propelled her into stardom.
