由讀賣電視台、日本電視台（NTV）在1995年、1996年、2001年以及2014年一共四次，於每週六晚間9點播映。是導演堤幸彥的出道作品。此外，電影版《金田一少年之事件簿 上海魚人傳說》也在1997年12月13日在日本上映，參與的演員與1995年、1996年版本的電視劇相同。 此外，1995年、1996年（堤幸彥監督、堂本剛主演）版本與2000年版本（松本潤主演）的演員皆有所不同。2005年秋季推出由龜梨和也主演的系列最新作《吸血鬼傳說殺人事件》、2013年冬季推出由山田涼介主演的《香港九龍財寶殺人事件》與2014年冬季推出也是由山田涼介主演的《獄門塾殺人事件》。 目前只有堂本剛演出的版本，有一個正式的完結篇。 在1995年9月9日、9月16日播出的《蠟人形城殺人事件》，當時原作漫畫也正在連載中，結果電視劇比原作的連載進度更快，在漫畫出刊之前就已經洩漏了劇情。 由於堂本剛和金田一的印象意外的十分契合，因此由堂本剛主演的版本壓倒性的受到廣大歡迎。但是，之後的金田一系列電視劇卻常被批評「已經變成傑尼斯系的偶像劇」。 http://zh.kindaichi.wikia.com/wiki/劇集系列
