The story takes place in nineteenth century in Turin, Italy. The events in the anime are based on Enrico Bottini's Journal. The boys in early adolescence, innocent and susceptible, meet a teacher of virtue. He tells them honorable and heart-warming stories with which the boys feel great empathy. After experiencing hard times and sharing various joys with their friends and family, the boys recognize what is most important of all: to love others.
Cuore è la storia scritta sotto forma di diario da Enrico Bottini, uno scolaro della terza elementare, che racconta gli episodi relativi a due anni di scuola, dall'inizio della "terza" con l'incontro del nuovo maestro Perboni, fino al conseguimento del diploma finale e la successiva partenza dalla città del ragazzo e della sua famiglia.
L'opera è ambientata nella Torino del XIX secolo ed i protagonisti sono ragazzi che si trovano a compiere gesti che denotano particolari virtù, come onestà, altruismo e difesa della patria.

Une nouvelle année scolaire commence pour Enrico Bottini, un jeune garçon innocent et insensible, et ses camarades de l'école Baretti de Turin. Un nouvel instituteur, M. Perboni, a été nommé à la place de leur ancienne maîtresse (Mme Delcardi) et il se montre très sévère. Néanmoins, les enfants vont bientôt découvrir que derrière son air dur se cache une personne pleine de sagesse. Une fois par mois, il leur raconte l'histoire d'un enfant italien courageux ayant affronté de grandes épreuves, épreuves qui font écho à la vie des ces élèves qui n'est pas toujours rose. Grâce à ces histoires réconfortantes, ces garçons reconnaissent ce qui est le plus important au monde : aimer les autres.
