岡山を訪れた金田一耕助は、鬼首村の温泉宿「亀の湯」に滞在する。村では23年前に殺人事件がおきていたのだ。そんなとき、村出身の人気歌手が里帰りし、村はその歓迎ムードに染まる。しかし、その直後から、幼なじみの若い女性たちが次々と殺されてゆく。遺体には不気味な装飾が施され、それは村に伝わる古い手毬唄の歌詞になぞらえられていた。過去の因縁、隠された血縁関係、そして復讐心が絡む中、金田一は真相に迫っていく。
