Lupin gelingt es zu fliehen, aber Gilbert, wird von der Polizei geschnappt und zum Tod mit der Guillotine verurteilt. Bevor er abgeführt
wird, steckt er Lupin noch einen Kristallstöpsel zu, mit dem Hinweis ihn gut zu verwahren.

Gilbert, membre de son organisation considéré par Lupin comme un fils, incite ce dernier à cambrioler la demeure du richissime Dautrecq. Mais Gilbert désire en fait récupérer un bouchon de cristal, tout comme un troisième larron, Sébastiani. Celui-ci, évidé, contient une liste de hautes personnalités impliquées dans un immense scandale financier. Dautrecq se sert de cette liste pour les faire chanter et assurer sa puissance. Il désire également obtenir les faveurs de Clarisse de Mergy, mère de Gilbert, qu’il convoite depuis sa jeunesse. Le cambriolage tourne mal quand Sébastiani abat un domestique présent sur les lieux, tout en étant grièvement blessé lui-même. La police intervient mais Lupin parvient à s’enfuir. Capturé, Gilbert est accusé du meurtre, Sébastiani étant mort des suites de sa blessure. Pour révéler la vérité et sauver Gilbert de la guillotine, Lupin a désespérément besoin de s’emparer de la liste. S’engage alors un duel entre lui et le terrible Dautrecq, dont il finit cependant par percer le secret : la liste dissimulée dans le bouchon de cristal n’est qu’un leurre, la véritable se trouvant à l’intérieur de l’œil de verre du maître-chanteur.
