Pongrácz István gróf háborúsdit játszik Forget őrnaggyal. A háború szünetében bált rendeznek, de ehhez várúrnő kell. A gróf megveszi Estellát a cirkusztól. Zsolnán az árva Apolka hol egyik, hol másik nagybátyjánál lakik. Pongrácz gróf börtönbe csukatja ifj. Behenczyt, akit Estella megszöktet és együtt Besztercebányára menekülnek. A gróf levelet ír a városnak, hogy adják vissza Estellát vagy lerombolja a várost. A nemleges válasz hallatán Pongrácz gróf megindítja hadait...
