  • S01E01 Episode One

    Fiona is knocked down by a car whilst running away to a concert. But her mum nearly causes another accident when she slaps a hot cup of tea from Mags's hand. Dave is stressed the new doctor hasn't arrived, and makes sure everybody knows it.

    Amanda arrives with a sick baby, Ben. After a gang fight, Matthew McCann is admitted with serious injuries; Lisa, a rival gang member, is in hospital for psoriasis, and their hostilities are brought into the children's ward. Dawn returns with a spleen complaints, while Claire, who should be going home, has lead poisoning. Keely also returns - this time not as a patient.

    Clare's father, at loggerheads with Dr. Gallagher over the subject of her lead poisoning, tells the local newspaper that she contradicted it from the hospital's water supply. Diane shows diabetic James how to inject himself, while Nurse Mitchell and Diane apply for the Ward Sister's job. Matthew is out of danger, but won't tell police who stabbed him. Keely decides to train as a nurse, while Charlotte suspects that Ben is not Amanda's baby.

    Amanda is anxious about baby Ben's operation. Staff now suspect he is not her child; when confronted by Steve Bailey, she leaves hospital with Ben. The children prepare for Paul's puppet show, and Mitchell is furious to learn of Diane's job application - forgetting to give James his snack. An upsetting discovery is made in the day room.

    A WPC interviews the children as Amanda returns with the baby. The puppet show has been a great success, but Diane is downhearted, convinced the interview went badly. Keely is feeling unwell, and Charlotte urges her to take a pregnancy test. Matthew and Lisa, meanwhile, maintain their aggressive stance.

    Amanda is charged with kidnapping the Jenks's baby. James goes home, as does Paul. Diane's fears about the outcome of her interview prove to the unfounded, while Keely's pregnancy test is positive. Matthew is set up by Lisa and attacked, and a budding pianist arrives on the ward after trapping her hand in the car door.

    Lisa steps in as Sean and Lob are attacking Matthew; he still gets hurt, however. Diane becomes Ward Sister, Keely tells her mother she's pregnant, and Thea has her operation. Jonathan's operation is postponed as he is now feeling better.

    A French boy is admitted to the ward via Casualty - the language barrier being eventually being breached by Thea's linguistic skills. Dawn, fearful of her operation, spurns Diane, and Keely tells Billy she's pregnant. Matthew, wondering why Lisa stopped the gang from hurting him, finds her in the day room and kisses her.

    Keely tells Billy to leave her alone. mitchell is rude to Mags, who then falls out with Diane. Dawn is moved to intensive care, and Kieran moves into Diane's flat. Matthew and Lisa are developing trust in each other - although Lisa endures taunts from his gangmates.

    Dawn is very poorly in intensive care, and not responding well to treatment. Billy and Keely argue, while Matthew convinces Lisa to trust him. Serge goes to Monkbridge for a scan, Mags reveals that Kieran is staying at Diane's flat, and Jonathan makes a crucial discovery about the nature of his condition.

    Sean, Lob and Sarah are waiting for Lisa, who has been seen with Matthew. When Lisa and Matthew return to the ward, a fight ensues. While Jonathan and Serge say their goodbyes, a new patient, Thomas, arrives on the ward. Dawn's heartbeat stops; her mother and little friend Melanie hope for the best.

    Mags arrives to find Melanie standing by Dawn's bed, and tries to explain gently that her friend's suffering is over. Linda tells Diane that Dawn was frightened of her operation; devastated, she decides she doesn't want to be Sister. Jonathan is finally successful at the Bar Mitzvah, and Dr. Langford tells Matthew that he's well enough to go home - but is it good news?

    Matthew is suicidal, but Lisa assures him that he is the one she loves. Diane tells Kieran of her decision to leave the hospital, and twin brothers Dominic and Richie devise a cunning plan that will enable Richie to attend a pop concert.

    Richie returns to the hospital just as Dominic is being taken to the operating theatre to have his brother's operation; their mother is not amused! Matthew goes home after pledging his love for Lisa, who sets a trap for Sean in order to reveal that he stabbed Matthew. Billy and Keely discuss their future, and the Billy Goat's Gruff play - held in memory of Dawn - is interrupted by a police chase...

    Young footballer Lee Jones collapses during a match. Nurse Gary Miller faces the consequences of losing his cool. Ex-visitor Cal is admitted as a patient, and new patients and staff join the children's ward.

    Danny throws his food around - behaviour which prompts staff members to quiz his parents as to his past history. Nurse Mitchell catches Lucy with a cabbage leaf; it is food for her pet tortoise, which has been living in her bed. Lee has his first session of dialysis, and learns that he will never be able to play football again.

    Bonfire preparations are underway as Lee arrives on the ward with his "minder". Danny's behaviour doesn't improve. Jack questions Philip as to where he bought his fireworks. James and Darren finally beat Cal at Trivial Pursuit. Jack tackles the newsagent about selling fireworks to children. As the bonfire blazes, Bryony searches for Cal....

    Cal has a convulsion and finds it very hard to accept the truth of his condition, as divulged by Mitchell. Danny's food tests go well, until he reacts violently to orange cordial. Fortunately this was planned, as Dr. Woods explains to Danny's mum. Eddie Jones arrives to see Lee, but Lee wants nothing to do with him.

    The D.J. has a sore throat, but Rowena comes to the rescue. James and Darren, horrified at the prospect, call on Lee to help stop her, but their plan backfires. Baby Jack's emergency operation is a success, and Gail and Kieran grow closer. Keely's scan goes well, but her relationship with Billy is a struggle.

    Lee leaves hospital promising to take it easy, but is determined to prove he's as fit as ever. Cal's stint as Bryony's chauffeur comes to an abrupt end. Baby Jack is still improving, and Mags jokingly tells Katie she thinks the hospital is haunted: an off-the-cuff quip that prompts the younger patients to form their own ghost-busting squad.

    Lee is back on Dialysis; his mother despairs of being able to keep a constant eye on him. Cal is told he can leave, but he still hasn't revealed his epilepsy to Bryony. Sister Meadows has cause to wonder if it's only Gail's children who are under observation. Rowena's talk is still of ghosts, while James and Darren prepare to tackle a ghostt of their own.

    Jack and Katie argue over the effects of tartrazine, and Sam admits to drinking caustic soda. Danny and Rowena go home. Mitchell presents her report to Dr. Woods regarding Dr. Gallagher's conduct. Marcus Jones seems more concerned with his promotion at work than with Lee, but later arrives with an unexpected offer.

    Sam drops and breaks the nativity set. Marcus comes in for tests; the results show he is a suitable donor, but Lee refuses the transplant. Dr. Gallagher says goodbye to Gail and Smithson arrives on the ward; prolonged questioning over his broken arm angers his father. Jack petitions to be Father Christmas, and Steve proposes to Dr. Woods.

    New arrival Helen Jordan requires immediate surgery on her appendix, but no parents appear to give consent. Only her young brother and sister visit, for whom she's clearly very concerned. There are two operations in the Jones family; emotions run high for Lee and Marcus. Wedding bells ring for Charlotte and Steve, but can they keep their news secret?

    Helen is storing toast in her locker for her hungry brother and sister; her parents still have not appeared. Mitchell and Bryony have separate theories about Charlotte's romantic inclinations, but both get a shock when the truth is revealed. More good news: Keely has a very healthy baby girl.

    Mitchell is kept in the dark about Charlotte's pre-wedding party. Billy's time with Keely and the baby is interrupted, and Keely finds the ring after he leaves. Happy times are revived as the Jones family watches an old football video, and Kieran is increasingly worried about Helen.

    Helen fears that she, Sally and Colin might be taken into care; drastic action is taken. Eddie wants to go back with Carol, and Lee and Marcus are in favour. Thanks to Mickey's cigarette, fire rages in the boiler room; the children are safely evacuated, though Cal is very ill after rescuing Helen. The big day arrives for Charlotte and Steve.
