a little cuiri heat eingin. the nickel which is suspended from a wire is atracted to the magnet but when iit heats up in the candle it becomes non magnetic. it then falls away and cools becoming magnetic again.

testing out a little homemade cannon that I built. it uses pink powder becous it is easyer to make than black powder. it shoots a 12 ounce lead ball.
calcium sulfate and corse aluminium powder. harder to light and slower bunining than the fine variety but much easyer to watch. at the end i sed that some aluminium was still burning but I think that it was some left over magnesium.

every year on labor day the Grantsville/Stansberry cross country team runs to the top of Deseret peak, we call it the Deseret Peak Challenge (the DPC). this is just the view from the top as filmed by coach smith. Deseret Peak is 11032 ft tall.
me demonstrating 2 different replacement reactions (thermite) using 2 different metal oxides(iron & copper) copper being lower on the activity series than Iron reacts more vigorously(even with coarser powder) I used a coarser powder on the copper because I wanted to show the liquid copper produced, if i used the german dark like the iron it would have produced a phenomenon I like to call metal rain. I will upload a video to show that at a later date.

I am ramping up the pressure by putting 2 vaccumes together. it seems to work, so now I will make a supper vacume from say 10 different units. I want to get to the top of Everest! lol :) taking the filter out by its self only added about 500ft. I do more tests than I film and I always make sure the tank can hold before I actually get inside. the barometer is reading inches of mercury. I managed to get about 2 inches in this test almost a full PSI! also I get plenty of ventilat
to simulate changing the altitude I hooked a vaccume cleaner up to a big old aluminium tank and then went inside. I have found that a house hold vaccume cleaner only produces the the equivalent of a thousand feet of elevation. sorry its so dark inside I plan on fixing it up eventualy, this is just some peliminary experiments. By the way I do have an confined space operating permit, and there are more safety feachers than are shown in the video.

Aas an experiment I tried lighting (home made) Thermite using sulfur and aluminium powder. it worked great and has become one of my favorite methods to light Thermite. The dish was stainless steel.
just a couple spoon fulls of Thermite on a piece of granite. i wanted to see how much of the rock it would melt. turns out that it didn't melt much, just sort of glassed it.. more Thermite perhaps?

The Maths as promised: Time of fall (Box is actually 23inches above snow level): 2ft = 1/2(32)t^2 2/16 = t^2 t = .35s Distance traveled: 253 strides x 2.5ft/stride = 633ft Speed: v = d/t v = 633/.35 v = about 1800fps this seems really fast so as a check I looked at the video to find how fast the gun recoiled (good thing I didn't put a rock behind it) I know the mass of the 2 objects and I know that the momentum should be the same assuming no losses. the gun weighs 3.7kg and the ball weighs .0
The 2nd gun fires at the same speed relative to its self regardless of the speed it is moving relative to the earth so I figured why not add the speed of another gun and get much more energy? To my knowledge no one has ever tried shooting a gun from a gun before. Perhaps using this method I could overcome the limits of gas guns and actually launch something into space. This was just a proof of concept test, perhaps next week I will shoot at something or start building bigger. Everything is home

Its depressing to see so many bees dead but the hive is still doing OK. A grand total of 2 bees came back to life when I warmed them up; I took the survivors back to the hive and buried the rest by the creek.

I sent the camera up again but pointing sideways with some stabilizing fins but unfortunately the balloon flew into a cloud and I lost track of it loosing the camera.
As described in the video I am starting a project where I take a camera every time I work on bee stuff so you can see what its like to be a bee keeper and learn as if you where doing it yourself, or at least closer to that than just reading about it or taking a class where you are hit with a huge amount of information all at once and then promptly forget it. A Beekeeper should have some wood working skills as... well bees like to live in wood. wow 22 minutes I better make that my rough time limit. I can already tell these episodes will have very variable length.
I really should not have opened the hive with the temperature bellow 40 degrees but I had to check on them and you cant always visit in good whether. besides I only got stung on my jacket ( the dark color attracts stings more than my pale skin) and I am not really counting that. I will keep a running total of the stings I receive to my body over the year. (I have never bothered counting and I am curious)

I dilute various acids incorrectly, to see what happens. I also add water to a base and a salt for comparison. The nitric was very pure 99%+ (anhydrous). The water was from rain collected over painted steel and the other chemicals ( HCl, NaOH & NH4NO3) were industrial grade.
A copper plate moving through a strong magnetic field experiences a resistance to motion caused by eddy currents in the metal, the effect is more noticeable at low temperatures.

I render down my supply of wax in preparation for a candle making workshop i am putting on.
Today I helped do a trash audit of the school and I decided that I would try to make something interesting by recycling what I found.
I make a candle out of bees wax and then electrocute it.

I perform a winter check on my hives to be sure they have enough food to get through the rest of the winter. this is about when most hives that die during the winter start to run low so is a good time to risk having a peak at their supplies.
After many requests I finally get Fraps and to test it out I fly a rocket into space using only radial thrusters for steering.
A simple liquid fueled rocket engine that runs on hydrochloric acid and sodium carbonate solution. It doesn't get much thrust but it does work in a similar way as a shuttle engine. I built it so I can get a feel for the workings of an engine before I build one that uses liquid oxygen and kerosene. when using a pressure cooker it is difficult to check the temperature because you can't see inside and so I use an indirect method.
A strong magnet is placed under a dish of electrolyte and the solution spins when a current is applied but not in the way that I expected. Update 3-28-14: I now have the answers and the explanation video will be out soon!

A 300 gallon tank that I have had plants growing in for the last 8 years.
The reason they where acting like this is probably due to then not having a queen, bees get very defensive while raising new queens because if they fail the hive dies. the behavior is similar to Americanized bees but they are indeed a European variety.

I make a small test batch of Fuming Red Nitric Acid and test it out in preparation for possibly using it as rocket propellent.
This is 6.5 weeks into my project (it is currently 8 weeks at time of uploading) everything seems to be going well, however there are not enough fish for the number of plants so I make up some hydroponic nutrients to supplement the system. I have also gone 100% solar!
now that its getting into mid summer, if the hives dont have at least 10 frames filled I will combine them so that I will have hives that have hope of surviving the winter.

Same spacecraft as last time but I try landing on a mountain. My aim isn't that great so I could probably do even better, but right now its just proof of concept.
In my final attempt I use the "cheaty" monoprop engines and land on the mountain. I could have still done better if I could have staged the spent tanks faster but its 20s better than my last attempt.

Arthur and I made a short video describing our idea for the opportunity quest competition.
Arthur and I go down to The Home Depot and put my Geiger counter next to a pallet of potassium chloride. We find that it would be a dangerous level if you were around it all the time. The activity of the ton of potassium should be about 26 million becquerels (disintegrations/second) we dont pick up near that much since the potassium blocks most of its own radiation.
I do one last check on my hives before winter really sets in.
After some redesigning my nitric/diesel rocket engine finally gets a decent burn and measurable thrust. But I can see a lot of work still needs to be done.
now that the fire danger has dropped significantly; I build and test the first motor of the season. Before it flew away with the 2X4 I measured almost 30lbs of thrust! Don't worry, my next vids wont be so long, I just wanted to show the whole process.

Many minerals contain iron but are not noticeably magnetic. Using standard geology class tools I devise a method to detect iron without a microscope. I think that you could also use this as a test to determining how much magnetic Iron is present by replacing the penny with a series of known masses once you find how strongly the magnet is attracted you could calculate the quantity of iron.
Experiencing a bit of normal weather in northern Utah.
I was informed of a strange smell in a bee hive fearing foulbrood I visited the hive to smell it for myself.
When a large truck passes me my speed is temperately boosted by about 4mph while using the same amount of fuel. Eventually I would like to repeat this experiment but with the throttle mechanically locked to eliminate human error.

I touch some molten lead and leave my fingerprint without getting burned. To clarify: "I poured the lead onto the tin" is referring to the tin plated steel; "I also did this with tin" I melted a piece of pure tin metal.

Turns out liquid nitrogen is no good for putting out burning oil. The nitrogen instantly expands 700X as it turns to gas, this throws the oil up into the air where it burns rapidly. I begin my quest to make a gun that can shoot at very cold temperatures by seeing what metals will work best. Hitting it with the hammer was to simulate the explosives detonating. The cold gunpowder video wont be the next on the channel but rather the next in the series.

Putting oxygen on a fire makes more fire; who knew? lol My initial reaction seems to be mostly accurate; the "explosion" was about the same or less but there was way more fire probably because the fire wasnt being suppressed by a non flammable gas. A demonstration of the leidenfrost effect, enjoy! the water and nitrogen vaporize so quickly that they form a layer of gas that the liquid can levitate on, the nitrogen of course can do it at much lower temps. On a rainy day I try firing a pellet gun using helium instead of air. You may ask: "But how do some pellet guns get bullets faster than the speed of sound?" well some air molecules are going faster than the average speed, half of them in fact, and some pellet guns have a plunger that compresses the gas suddenly thus heating it and increasing the speed of the particles.
