Dalziel and Pascoe investigate the murder of a judge, who though married was homosexual, the judges wife is a politician and because of fears that the murder may have something to do with that fact, Dalziel finds himself having to deal with Special Branch as well as solve thecrime.

Dommeren Jerry Chance er midt i en højt profileret narkosag og under konstant politiovervågning, da han bliver skudt ned tæt ved sit hjem. Det ligner et professionelt mord, og den tiltalte i narkosagen er politiets hovedmistænkte. Dalziel opdager dog, at den myrdedes kone havde en affære, og som Dalziel og Pascoe graver dybere i sagen, opdager de flere politiske intriger og skumle, økonomiske aftaler.
