Rajat comes from his village to the city of Lucknow with father’s expectation that “beta gaon ka naam roshan karega”, and mother’s three kasams, which will help him in cracking UPSC. But on the first day itself he ends up in a gang, drinks alcohol, and has a crush on a girl, thereby breaking all the three kasams, and endangering dad's dream.
Rajat has first brushes and interactions with Prerna, the most desirable girl in college, and all sorts of chemical reactions are taking place in his heart. But he realizes that hot girls are rarely ever single and ready to mingle, when he meets her dashing “BFF”, Ritesh during the freshers party.
Rajat decides to suppress his loveria for prerna, and focus on studies, remembering prashant's teaching that life is like chess, black and white, failure or success. But the more he tries to distance her, more she tries to befriend him, and Rajat ends up verbally sparring with Ritesh as a consequence. But then a chance meeting with a mystery woman reignites ishqfluenza in his heart.
When Rajat finds himself obsessing over the mystery woman, he likens himself to a ‘Mausam ka mendhak’ who is 'tartara-oaing' for a princess who will kiss him and make him a prince. He is torn between his feelings for Prerna and this fascinating mystery woman. This same mystery woman is also the one to give him the vital eye opening gyan that, in order to win a girls heart.
Confident Rajat, reapproaches Prerna and impulsively touches her face. She seems offended , he is crestfallen and then to top it all, he discovers that the mystery woman -“ Chaya " is no one but Prashant Bhaiya's long standing girlfriend. He is crushed with the double whammy till he comes to know that Prerna was opposite of offended.
Rajat is stressing over an assignment when he gets entangled in a web of distraction by Yuvan, who wants to slap back the girl who slapped him, to avenge his insult. Rajat disapproves of his action but gets dragged along by Shashank. At the last moment Yuvan bails, and they are caught by police.
Rajat is invited to Prerna’s birthday and his friends insist he dress up in a 3 piece suit, buy a gift for Prerna as well as her dad. They also push him to tell her he likes her during party, and ask for a kiss as return gift. Rajat realizes his friends pranked him when he becomes laughing stock of party.
Rajat comes back from Prerna’s party, and finds his father waiting for him. DSC dresses him down, doubting if he will ever be able to repay doodh ka karz. Rajat is shaken by the experience and pulls back from falling in love, but his friends get him back on track, and push him to kiss Prerna to seal their love.
Months have passed and Rajat is still only friends with prerna. As valentine's day nears, his friends push him to finally get the first kiss and put his love into second gear. Rajat plans to propose to Prerna but she goes to mussoorie as her nani is sick. Rajat gets invited to Chaya's party, where he witnesses chaya and prashant fight over him not clearing UPSC
On one hand, Rajat feels guilty for almost kissing Chaya and on the other he is deeply hurt due to Prerna’s lie. He starts skipping classes, reading sad love stories and throwing library books on the floor in anger. His friends are worried for him and make him promise he won't commit suicide.
Rajat writes 'prerna gupta bewafa hai' on some currency notes and distributes them craftily in the campus. This leads to confrontation between Prerna and Rajat. Prashant intervenes and makes Rajat realize that he has to trust Prerna if he loves her. Rajat apologises and confesses his love and they end up kissing for the first time. Rajat decides to teach Ritesh a lesson for lying.
Rajat and friends are unrepentant in the lock-up, thinking they will get bailed out like last time, and that they were right in teaching that snake Ritesh a lesson. DSC is shocked to see Rajat defending his actions. DSC blames Shashank and treats his father SK with contempt. Yuvan's brother tries to bribe the police and get the boys out but Ritesh's father is a big lawyer.
Shashank is angry with Rajat because DSC discriminated agaisnt SK & Shashank. Even though shashank dislikes his own father but he hates discrimination even more. Shashank is punishing Rajat by going close to Prerna. He takes her to a restaurant and feeds her with his hand. Rajat finds out Shashank has a secret.
Rajat is dating Prerna but feels that she gives more time to friends than to him, although he does everything she asks him to, like participating in science fest, for which, he is making an original invention; a love galvanomter or a love testing machine. Rajat tells his friends that they misjudged Ritesh. He can't be all that bad if he took back the case.
Rajat goes drunk to Chaya's house and tries to kiss her, in a fit of brokenness. Chaya puts him down gently. He fights with her when he finds out that she's leaving Lucknow and Prashant, as she is done with that relationship. Rajat then visits Prashant, discovers that he is depressed, and leaving his hostel room to move somewhere else.Rajat is convinced that Prerna doesn’t love him.
Rajat is heartbroken and plans to expose Prerna in front of everybody. He feels detached even from his friends and stays alone most of the time. Right before the exams, Rajat prepares chits and during the exam, puts them in Prerna’s bag. The letter gets caught for cheating in the exam and Shashank suspects Rajat for framing Prerna. He goes after Rajat and questions him.
Yuvan and Shashank call Rajat to talk face to face with Prerna, where Rajat talks extremely ill about Prerna, thus breaking her heart. Shashank feels bad for Prerna and goes after her to talk to her. Yuvan brings Rajat and Shashank to discuss out their differences, but Rajat speaks ill of Shashank too and the duo get into a fight.
A disturbed Rajat goes to his hometown. He feels guilty for securing low results and disappointing his parents. His cousin, back in the village, informs him about how his father has stopped meeting everybody fearing that somebody might ask him about Rajat’s marks and comment about his decision of sending Rajat to the big city. While his father is asleep, Rajat leaves for Lucknow.
On reaching Lucknow, Rajat learns that Shashank is leaving the Haveli and shifting to some other place. Rajat decides to go to Delhi for two months to join a crash course. Before leaving, he goes to meet Prashant, who looks shattered. The next day, as Rajat is about to leave for Delhi, he receives a phone call from his father, who informs him that Prashant has committed suicide in his room.
Rajat is shattered by Prashant’s sudden demise. Rajat’s father explains to Rajat that he shouldn’t get so stressed about studies and he can always join him in his dairy and farm. But Rajat assures his father that he will work very hard and never think of committing suicide. After completing his crash course in Delhi, Rajat successfully clears his UPSC written examination.
