Charles Whitman

Following what was, at the time, the worst mass murder in US history, investigators pore over the evidence, attempting to uncover clues as to how and why it happened. What they learn about Charles Joseph Whitman will become a template for future law enforcement prevention and investigation of such crimes. At twelve years old, Whitman was the youngest Eagle Scout in America. He was an altar boy and the pitcher on his Catholic school's baseball team. To everyone, Charles Joseph Whitman seemed like the quintessential ‘All American Boy’. But on August 1, 1966, at the age of twenty-five, one day after he'd brutally murdered his mother and wife, Whitman carried a small arsenal of high-powered weapons and 700 rounds of ammunition to the top of the University of Texas clock tower. For 97 minutes, he shot at the students, teachers and bystanders below, wounding 31 and killing 14.
