五十年代,新加坡翡翠山的张家战后家业兴盛。掌舵人张企业早逝,三子承继家业。长媳淑玉害死公公,被婆婆秀娘疏远,家务由二媳妇淑琴接手。秀娘丧夫足不出户三年,淑琴悉心照料,终劝动她在48岁生日当天出房门。秀娘坚持不让淑玉参加上香,淑琴巧设局让淑玉做秀娘爱吃的咖喱木薯叶。不料木薯叶被抢购,淑玉错失时机。
Zhang Qi Ye dies young. His sons continue the thriving post-war family business. Qi Ye’s bereaved wife Xiu Niang shuns Shu Yu for causing Qi Ye’s death. Shu Qin runs the household and convinces Xiu Niang to leave her room on her 48th birthday. Xiu Niang insists Shu Yu cannot pay respects to Qi Ye. Shu Qin gets Shu Yu to make Xiu Niang’s favourite Gulai Daun Singkong, but the leaves are sold out.
