London After Dark - Jack the Ripper & The Birth of True Crime

In this series, we dive into a world of murder, monsters, mysteries, and misdeeds, but also into something even more powerful: the rise of cheap, disposable print that reshaped our culture forever. From penny dreadfuls and crime papers to sensational broadsheets, these publications fueled the birth of true crime, tabloid media, mass literacy, and even helped shape the vampires and monsters we still fear today. We’ll explore infamous figures like Jack the Ripper and crack open the pages of the notorious Illustrated Police News, packed with grisly murders, dramatic investigations, and stories that were mostly true… or at least true enough to sell. Because Victorian horror did not begin in a dark castle or foggy graveyard. It began in ink, outrage, and spectacle, right at the foot of the hangman’s noose.
