ハイランド王国、少年兵部隊の一員として遠征に出たリリュウと親友のジョウイ。明日は幼なじみのナナミが待つ故郷キャロへ帰れるという最後の夜、山中で敵の奇襲に遭う。兵に追い詰められた二人は、再会を約束し、夜の滝へと飛び込んだ。リリュウが気絶から目を覚ますと、そこは敵である都市同盟軍の傭兵砦の中。捕虜として砦で働きながら、リリュウの中に芽生えるハイランド軍への疑念。自分たちは罠に嵌められたのか？ だとしたら誰が……？そんなリリュウの元へ姿を現すジョウイ。ジョウイも同じく、敵の領地に流れ着いていたのだ。すべての答えを知るため、キャロの街へ戻る。そう誓いを立て、砦を脱出するリリュウとジョウイ。その行く手には、さらに大きな陰謀の渦が待ち受けていた……。

Two young boys... the hero, Riliu, and his best friend Jowy, were members of a youth brigade of their home nation, the Highland Kingdom - a powerful military nation located in the north-east of the Dunan region.
The two of them looked up at the same starry skies, slept in the same tent, and believed in the same future. Once the fighting was over, and the night ended, their daily lives were sure to return.
Contrary to their hopes, the two boys become swept up in the whirlpool of fate, guided by the flames of war.
The powerless boys reached for, and grasped immense power. As the 108 stars shine brightly in the murky horizon, the boys step forward, each with their own beliefs for an answer-less question.
Riliu et Jowy, membres d'une brigade de l'armée du royaume de Highland, effectuent leur dernier tour de garde lorsque leur campement est attaqué par surprise par l'Alliance des Cités de Jowston, alors même qu'une trêve entre les deux camps vient d'entrer en vigueur. Sur ordre de leur capitaine, tous deux s'enfuient dans la forêt voisine, où ils assistent, impuissants, à la mort de tous leurs compagnons. Alors que leurs poursuivants se rapprochent de plus en plus, leur seule issue est un saut téméraire du haut d'une cascade. Ils survivent, mais se retrouvent séparés, et se réveillent chacun de leur côté au beau milieu du territoire ennemi.
Riliu und Jowy haben ihren letzten Wachdienst bei der Einhorn-Jugendbrigade, als ihr Lager überraschend von der Armee des Jowston-Städtebündnisses angegriffen wird, und das, obwohl zwischen beiden Seiten eigentlich ein Waffenstillstand herrscht. Auf Befehl ihres Hauptmanns fliehen die beiden in den Wald. Dort müssen sie hilflos mitansehen, wie ihre Kameraden einer nach dem anderen getötet werden. Als auch ihnen die Verfolger immer näher kommen, bleibt ihnen nur ein waghalsiger Sprung einen Wasserfall hinunter. Sie überleben, werden dabei jedoch voneinander getrennt. Und damit nicht genug. Beide finden sich anschließend mitten im Feindesgebiet wieder.
