Simon is a timid boy who has no special abilities except for a knack of drilling underground. Kamina is the polar opposite - reckless and bold and with an incredible sense of self-confidence, he strives to go to a place where there is no ceiling and freedom truly awaits. As they toil in an underground village oppressed by a village chief who disregards anyone who challenges his authority, a gargantuan Gunmen piloted by a Beastman invades the village from the surface. Kamina sees this as his big break to reach the surface. However, what else will he and Simon encounter up there in a world where mankind is under the iron fist of the Beastmen and their Gunmen, led by the mysterious Lord Genome?

Simon es un chico tímido que no tiene habilidades especiales, excepto por una habilidad especial para perforar bajo tierra. Kamina es el polo opuesto: imprudente y audaz, y con un increíble sentido de confianza en sí mismo, se esfuerza por ir a un lugar donde no hay techo y la libertad realmente lo espera. In un futuro lontano, Simon è un ragazzino timido che vive nel villaggio sotterraneo di Jiha e trascorre le sue ore, giorno e notte che sia, a scavare fosse. Un giorno ritrova sottoterra una piccola trivella luminescente e un mecha forgiato a forma di grande faccia. Si tratta del Lagann. Di tutto il villaggio l'unico a credere in lui è Kamina, un ragazzo più grande che si è sempre comportato nei suoi confronti come se ne fosse un fratello.
