Hokuto begins to feel joy and hope through the unconditional love of his foster mother, Ayako. He passes his university exam and starts a bright new life. But when Ayako falls seriously ill, Hokuto is terrified of losing the first person who truly loved him, and his fate starts to unravel.

里親である近藤綾子（宮本信子）の無償の愛情に触れ、生まれ変わったように、生きることの喜びを感じ始めていた北斗。大学受験にも合格し、順風満帆な生活を送っていた。しかしこの幸せは永くは続かなかった。いつしか北斗の人生のすべてともいえる綾子に、病魔が忍び寄っていたのだ。初めて綾子から愛を教えてもらった北斗は、綾子を失うことをただただ恐れていた。そして、過酷な運命の歯車が徐々に狂い始める。
