What if your first day on the job really was a matter of life and death? This series follows the lives of nine student paramedics as they go on their first ever placement with the East Midlands Ambulance Service. After just a few weeks in university they are thrown on to the emergency frontline at the busiest time of year - the six weeks leading up to Christmas when the ambulance service is pushed to breaking point.
Now in their second week of training, the pressure steps up and the junior paramedics deal with their most testing cases yet. From a woman having heart attack, to getting to grips with a dislocated ankle in sub zero temperatures and one student comes face to face with every junior paramedic's worst fear.
The juniors are now halfway through their placement and as the excitement of the job wears off the strain starts to show. Amy is pushed to the brink with a mental health case, Steph finds out what it's like to treat someone of the same age and Max shows nerves of steel at his first major road traffic accident.
The juniors are now over halfway through their placement and feeling like they are part of the team. It's a full moon and the students realise that paramedics are a superstitious bunch. Steph has to keep her wits about her at an armed siege and Ashley shows nerves of steel when dealing with a patient at a house fire.
The juniors are nearing the end of their placement, but finding that the patients don't get any easier. Bryn is struggling to overcome his fear when dealing with babies, Steph is faced with a teenager trapped under a car and Lucy has to deal with her first cardiac arrest.
The juniors are now completing their final shifts on placement and it's their last chance to impress. It's Bryn's last night on the job and he gets his biggest challenge yet with a complicated trauma case. Steph is caught up in a potentially volatile situation when there's an attacker on the prowl and it's crunch time as the mentors mark the juniors' performances. But who will pass and who will fail?
In this final episode we re-live the highs and lows of their placements and see how far they've progressed and grown in confidence in such short a space of time. Including Steph's first big road traffic accident, Amy getting emotional when dealing with an elderly gentleman and Max getting told off for turning up late. It's been a busy, eye-opening and sometimes bumpy ride.
