Warsaw, 1878. On Krakowskie Przedmieście there is a haberdashery shop called “J. Mincel and S. Wokulski.” In the absence of its principal — and at the same time his friend — Wokulski, the shop is managed by Mr. Ignacy Rzecki. One day, Wokulski returns from abroad, bringing with him a considerable fortune earned through military supply contracts. He decides to expand the shop and gain entry into the salons of the aristocracy, driven by his love for the beautiful Izabela Łęcka, the daughter of a ruined aristocrat. Yet the haughty countess sees in him nothing more than a tradesman.

Pod nieobecność pryncypała, a zarazem przyjaciela - Wokulskiego, sklep prowadzi pan Ignacy Rzecki. Pewnego dnia Wokulski wraca z zagranicy przywożąc ze sobą spory majątek, którego dorobił się na dostawach wojskowych. Postanawia rozbudować sklep i dostac sie na salony arystokracji, a motorem jego poczynań jest miłość do pięknej Izabeli Łęckiej, córki zrujnowanego arystokraty. Ale wyniosła hrabianka widzi w nim jedynie kupczyka.
