Vance Grodie, aufmüpfiger Bürgerrechts-Anwalt erreicht, dass der Schwarze Darnell Marbury, der einen Polizisten erschossen hat, freigesprochen wird. Kurz darauf wird der Anwalt vor dem Pub, in dem er seinen Sieg feiert, erschossen. Briscoe und Green müssen, ob sie wollen oder nicht, in den eigenen Reihen ermitteln und stoßen auf Kevin Wilson, den Bruder des Opfers, der kurz vor der Tat noch im Pub gesehen wurde. Wilson liefert ein Detail, das noch gar nicht aufgefallen war: Grodies Palm Pilot, den er bei sich hatte, ist verschwunden und mit ihm Namen und Adressen aller Mandanten und Kollegen. Grodies Daten tauchen schließlich auf dem Computer von Julian Preuss, Leiter einer Filiale der nazi-freundlichen 'American Patriot Union' auf. Preuss wird festgenommen und erhält verschärfte Haftbedingungen, gegen die die Verteidigerin, Danielle Melnick, anzugehen versucht. Als schließlich ein Freund von Grodie, ein Staatsanwalt aus Florida, erschossen wird, gerät Melnick in Verdacht, Informationen von Preuss weitergegeben zu haben. Ein Lauschangriff bestätigt den Verdacht. Melnick wird wegen Verabredung zum Mord angeklagt.
A defense attorney who managed the acquittal of the defendant in the attempted murder of a cop is gunned down outside a Manhattan restaurant. The detectives start with police officers in the precinct of the injured officer, then to his brother, before they are led to a white supremacist who is part of a national network. McCoy is faced with the unlikely prospect that the defendant's attorney, his friend of 20 years and a friend of the slain lawyer, played a part in the murder of a Florida district attorney following the defendant's arrest. McCoy is able to make a deal that perserves the integrity of his adversary, but not without a cost.
