Die Clowns Simon und Homer sind die Attraktion des Zirkus Santini. Als man Simon mit gebrochenem Genick auffindet, gerät sein Partner unter Mordverdacht. Ein Motiv findet sich schnell: Simon hatte Homer kurz vor seinem Tod die Partnerschaft aufgekündigt. Untersützt von seinem neuen Mitarbeiter Conrad übernimmt Matlock den Fall. – Clarence Gilyard Jr. („Top Gun“, „Stirb langsam“) steigt in die Serie ein.

Matlock agrees to defend aging clown Homer Fleming after he's charged with the murder of his long-time partner, Simon. After asking Conrad to go undercover as a roustabout at the circus, Matlock starts to realise that everyone had a very good reason to hate Simon Le Simple.
