Sisters Germaine, Aretha, Yoko, Mariah and baby Cher live with their brother Wyatt and their mother Della on a Wolverhampton council estate. Germaine is in love with local lout Lee Rind, and dreams of a Jane Austen-style romance. Aretha, with her love of Jung and Barack Obama, has a more realistic outlook. Constantly at loggerheads yet covering one another's backs, the sisters are trying to live the dream - while all Della wants them to do is mow the lawn.
The Garrys are taken out into nature to forage for free food, and Yoko reaches a female milestone in the bushes. Germaine has an unhealthy plan to get closer to Lee.
When Germaine's vicious 'visible panty line' traumatises the only male Garry child, Della takes the kids into town on an emergency underwear mission.
In a Wolverhampton heatwave, cousin Cathy arrives at the Garry home, and soon catches the eye of Lee, Germaine's would-be boyfriend. Della, meanwhile, is attempting self-sufficiency to reduce her massive food bill.
